How to Prepare for CLAT From Scratch?

Starting your CLAT preparation from zero can feel overwhelming. The syllabus looks vast, and the competition is fierce. However, every topper was once a beginner. The key to cracking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) lies not in how much you know today, but in how disciplined your roadmap is for tomorrow. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you build your foundation.

Step 1: The Most Important Decision

Self-study is good, but Structured Mentorship is better. The syllabus is tricky, and studying the wrong things is a waste of time.

Step 2: Understand the Exam Pattern

Before you open a book, understand the battlefield. CLAT is a 2-hour offline exam with 120 questions. It is passage-based, meaning you need to read fast.

Subject Questions (Approx) Skill Needed
English Language 22-26 Reading Speed & Vocab
Current Affairs & GK 28-32 Memory & Awareness
Legal Reasoning 35-39 Application of Principle
Logical Reasoning 28-32 Critical Thinking
Quantitative Techniques 10-14 Basic Math & DI

Step 3: Build the Reading Habit

3

Read, Read, and Read

CLAT is a reading-intensive exam. If you are starting from scratch, subscribe to a national newspaper like The Hindu or The Indian Express immediately. Read the Editorial section daily. This covers 3 sections: English (Vocab), GK (Current Events), and Logic (Arguments).

Step 4: Clear Your Basics

4

Don't Jump to Mocks Yet

English: Fix your grammar and learn 10 new words daily.
Math: Revisit Class 10th Profit/Loss, Percentage, and Ratios.
Legal: This is new for you. Join Knowledge Nation Law Centre to learn Torts, Contracts, and Criminal Law from scratch. Do not try to memorize Sections or Articles; learn the concepts.

Step 5: Consistency Over Intensity

5

Create a Schedule

You don't need to study 12 hours a day. You need to study 4 hours a day, every single day. Dedicate 1 hour to Newspaper, 1 hour to Legal Theory, 1 hour to Practice Questions, and 1 hour to Math/Logic.
