Reading Comprehension (Q37–48)

Passage 1 Technology has transformed the way people access information. A student can now access thousands of books, lectures and articles within minutes. However, easy access to information does not necessarily mean easy access to knowledge. Information must be evaluated, compared and understood before it can become useful knowledge. The ability to distinguish reliable information from misleading or inaccurate material has therefore become increasingly important.

Passage 2 Justice requires more than simply applying rules mechanically. Laws are created to achieve particular social objectives, and courts often have to interpret their meaning in changing circumstances. At the same time, judicial interpretation cannot become unrestricted law-making. Courts must respect the constitutional framework and the limits of their institutional role. The challenge is therefore to interpret laws in a manner that gives effect to their purpose while remaining faithful to the legal framework.

Q41

What is the main argument?

  • (A) Courts should ignore legislation.
  • (B) Courts should mechanically apply every rule.
  • (C) Courts must balance purposive interpretation with respect for legal limits.

Passage 3 Urban development often involves difficult choices. Expanding roads may reduce traffic congestion in the short term, but it can also encourage greater dependence on private vehicles. Effective urban planning therefore requires decision-makers to consider not merely immediate convenience but also long-term consequences.
