CLAT Legal Reasoning Preparation

1 Syllabus / exam pattern

• Consortium CLAT UG: Legal Reasoning — passages of about 450 words on fact situations, public-policy questions or legal matters.
• No prior legal knowledge is required as a formal eligibility condition; questions test application of the stated principles and rules.
• Current Consortium papers do not restore a separate “Legal Aptitude GK” paper; keep legal current affairs in the GK section.

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Explained papers in the archive keep principle + questions together. Recurring themes:

• Principle–fact: apply only the given rule, ignore outside maxims.
• Exceptions and provisos hidden in a later sentence of the principle.
• Public-policy or constitutional extracts testing inference, not case names.
• Contract, tort, criminal and constitutional fact patterns as vehicles, not as law-school papers.

• Limited principle sheets revised many times — not a new Bare Act every month.

4 Strategy

• Underline the legal test (elements) before reading the facts.
• Ask: which element is missing? That usually kills three options.
• If the principle and a popular maxim conflict, the principle on the page wins.

5 Common mistakes

• Importing IPC/Contract sections the passage never stated.
• Moralising (“he should pay”) instead of applying the rule.
• Reading AILET’s older Legal Aptitude pattern into current CLAT.

6 Worked approach

Worked approach: Principle — “Whoever dishonestly misappropriates property entrusted to him is guilty of criminal breach of trust.” Fact — a repairer keeps a phone after the owner fails to collect it for a year, with no demand proved.
