CLAT English Language Preparation

1 Syllabus / exam pattern

• Consortium CLAT UG: English Language — passages of about 450 words drawn from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction.
• Questions test comprehension, inference, summarising, comparing viewpoints, and vocabulary in context.
• Confirm the latest section list and timings on the Consortium notification and on KN’s CLAT syllabus page.

2 Previous year questions (PYQs)

Practise explained papers in the PYQ archive (passage groups kept together). Typical English themes:

• Main idea vs a detail that only appears in one paragraph.
• Tone (critical, ironic, descriptive) without importing outside knowledge.
• Vocabulary-in-context rather than dictionary first meanings.
• What the author would agree / disagree with.

4 Strategy

• Read the passage once for structure (claim, example, contrast), then the questions.
• Mark line references in the extract before locking an inference.
• Eliminate options that are true in the world but not in the passage.
• Time-box: leave no English passage unfinished to chase GK.

5 Common mistakes

• Answering from general knowledge instead of the extract.
• Treating CLAT English as error-spotting / fill-in-the-blanks from older papers.
• Spending too long on one vocabulary item.
